The Providence Number 1 doubles team of Courtney Murphy and Emily DiNoto, won the Individual Doubles Championship at Floyd Central on Thursday afternoon. Providence defeated the Salem Tandem in two sets. Providence won the first set 6-1 and was leading 3-0 before Salem stormed back to take a 5-4 lead. Providence won two of the next three games to force a tiebreaker. Salem jumped up 4-0 in the tiebreaker, but again the Providence team was not to be denied and won 7 of the next 8 points to close out the tiebreaker at 7-5. Coach DiNoto noted that Providence really played the first 10 games very effectively. But over the next six games Salem played some very strong tennis in non-traditional ways. Gradually Providence got their second wind to force the tiebreaker. It appears that the girls will play their next match on June 6th in the regional.
