Travis wins 2nd Singles at New Albany Invitational


Travis Cunningham was the winner of the number 2 singles position for the Providence Tennis Team in the New Albany invitational. Travis won his first two matches very easily losing just four games. In his first match he defeated a player from Pekin Eastern 6-1, 6-0 and his second match was against a player from Scottsburg he won 6-0, 6-3. In the finals of 2nd singles he played a very good player from New Albany winning in three set, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. In the final match he got up early, lost the lead before winning the finally winning the last three games to close out the match. Providence will face New Albany on Friday.


Pete Andres at number 1 singles won his opening match against Lanesville, 6-1, 6-0 on Friday night. He lost a three set match to Austin, he defaulted his final match due to illness.


Jacob Kraft lost a close three set match to a player from Scottsburg on Friday night. On Saturday he won both of his matches defeating players from Charlestown and Austin.


Number 1 doubles of Nick Primavera and Brenden Popson lost their first match to New Albany on Friday night, who won that spot in the tournament. They won both matches on Saturday against teams from Pekin Eastern and Clarksville; Providence will face Clarksville this week also.


Number 2 doubles lost their first two matches against Austin and Scottsburg, both of these matches went three sets for Nick Finn and Drew Thomas. In the final match for number 2 doubles, a lineup change was made with Daniel Becht playing with Nick Finn, they won their match against Charlestown.

Providence JV loses to Corydon Varsity

The junior varsity team dropped a close match to Corydon varsity at Corydon. The match score is not indicative of the closeness of the match losing 4-1. With Ryan Juodikis winning in a reserve match 8-4. Andrew Jerdonek won at 3rd singles in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 jumping out to early leads in each set. Daniel Becht lost a three set match 6-0, 3-6, 3-6 against a solid number 1 player. Joe Solis lost 5-7, 5-7 at second singles. First double of Steven Cabezas and Jacob Samples lost 0-6, 4-6, they staged a strong rally in the second set but fell short. Second doubles of Derek Benebig and Weston Spalding played a strong match losing 5-7, 5-7. The junior varsity played well in general but had critical points which they did not win, which could have turned several of the matches around.

The JV boys will have one day of practice prior to facing another varsity team on Monday.

Providence JV defeats South Central JV 4 - 1

joeThe Providence Junior Varsity team defeated the South Central Junior Varsity at Community Park. This was a JV only match. All winners won their second set at a 4-0 score. Joe Solis played number 1 singles and was a 4-0, 4-0 winner, he was the first player to complete his match. Andrew Jerdonek won 4-2, 4-0 at second singles and Ryan Juodikis provided a sweep of the singles position winning third singles at 5-3, 4-0. The number two doubles combo of Derek Benebig and Weston Spalding won 4-2, 4-0. The only loser on the day was the first doubles team which lost in three set (third set super tie breaker); the team of Steven Cabezas and Jacob Samples won the first set and then dropped the second before losing in the tie breaker for the third set.

This was the first match in which the players had extensive coaching, since during the first two matches they played at the same time as the varsity. Most of the players responded very well to the coaching and were able to accomplish on the court what the coaches were requesting of them.

Providence Drops a Close Match


TravisProvidence lost a close match to Seymour 3-2. The end of the match was highlighted by third singles and first doubles going three sets, the teams each won one of the final matches thus the final score of 3-2 in favor of the Owls. Senior Travis Cunningham had an impressive win at number 2 singles winning the match 6-0, 6-0 and was the first match off the courts. The other victory for the Pioneers came at third singles with Senior Jacob Kraft winning in three set, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Jacob came from behind in the third set for the victory. Number one doubles of Senior Nick Primavera and Sophomore Brenden Popson lost a three set match 4-6, 6-3, 2-6.

The junior varsity also won two matches, but lost 3-2 as a team. Daniel Becht won 4-1, 4-0 at 1st singles and Andrew Jerdonek won 4-1, 4-1 at third singles. This was the first win for both of these competitors. Each of the other three matches were lost in a third set super tie breaker. The JV team plays sets to 4 games and must win by two games and the third set is a super tie breaker to 10 by 2.

Providence loses to Jeff

In the first match of the season the Pioneers lost to the Red Devils on Jeffersonville's home courts. Jeff has one of the better number one singles players in the state and he won over Pete Andres.

Providence has had to replace four of the top eight players from last year's squad and three players playing in their first varsity match against the always strong Jeff team.

Travis Cunningham was the lone winner for the Pioneers at Number 2 singles, winning a match that went three sets and more than three and one-half hours. Two of the sets went to a tie break. Travis dropped the first set in a tie breaker and proceeded to win the second set at 6-2, he won the third set also in a tie breaker.

Senior Jacob Kraft lost in straight sets, with a close second set. The number 1 doubles team of Nick Primavrera and Brenden Popson lost in straight sets as did the number 2 doubles team of Nick Finn and Drew Thomas. Both doubles matches were close.

Number two singles in JV was won by Joe Solis in straight sets and number one doubles of Steven Cabezas and Jacob Samples won in three sets.

The next match will be on Thursday at Providence home courts of Community Park in New Albany at 5 PM.
