North Harrison falls to the Pioneers 4 - 1



In the next to last regular season match the Pioneers defeated North Harrison 4 – 1 without two of the regular starters.

Pete Andres went out and dominated at first singles winning 6 – 0, 6 – 0. Pete played very aggressive and won most every point. He was the first off the courts today.

Senior Nick Primavrera played second singles and had an impressive win at 6 – 1, 6 – 2. Nick played a very controlled match and did a great job in position serving.

Andrew Jerdonek played 3rd singles and recorded his second varsity win. He won the first set 7 – 5, but trailed much of the second set before a rally that created a tiebreaker which he won 7 – 5, for a second set 7 – 6 win.

Nick Finn and Brenden Popson moved up to 1st doubles and played a tough match to record a 7 -5, 6 – 3 victory, which was the deciding point.

Drew Thomas and Daniel Becht played at number 2 doubles and lost a close match 2 – 6, 4 – 6.

In JV matches Joe Solis won 8 – 1 at 1st singles and Jacob Samples won 8 – 5 at 2nd singles. Joe played an outstanding match and Jacob rallied for the win. Both of the JV doubles teams lost very close matches.

Providence defeats Borden 4 – 1

Providence defeated Borden at Community Park. This was the last home match of the season and the seniors on the team were recognized. Our seniors were Captain Travis Cunningham, Nick Primavera, Jacob Kraft and Drew Thomas; along with head manager Hanna Gish and Sammie Riggs.

Pete Andres won a good match at number 1 singles 6 – 3, 6 – 4. Pete played a very controlled match.


Travis Cunningham at number two singles, lost one game in route to a 6 – 0, 6 – 1 victory. Travis dominated every aspect of the match.


Drew Thomas played third and lost a very close match 6 – 4, 7 – 5. It looked as if Drew would win the second set taking the match into a third set, before his opponent rallied to win the second set.


Number 1 doubles of Nick Primavera and Jacob Kraft played a tough first set, but dominated the second. They won 6 – 4, 6 – 1.

Number 2 doubles of Nick Finn and Brenden Popson started strong winning the first set 6 – 0, they struggled slightly to win the second set 6 – 4.

The doubles team of Joe Solis and Daniel Becht won a reserve doubles match 8 – 1. Andrew Jerdonek won a reserve singles match 8 – 6.

Providence Wins Third Straight Match in a Sweep

Providence Boys Tennis Team won over Madison 5 – 0 winning all matches in straight sets. Southern Indiana Catholic shared the courts with the Pioneers and swept New Washington Middle School 5 – 0. The Pioneers rested two of their seniors thus having every player playing in a new position (from their normal place) except Pete Andres who played at number 1 singles.

The highlight of the day was when Andrew Jerdonek won at 3rd singles in his first varsity start. Andrew won 6-2, 6-4 against a solid number 3 from Madison. Andrew played a very good match and did everything his coaches asked of him.

Pete Andres at number 1 singles was pushed to a second set tie breaker. He won the first set 6-3 and fell behind in the second with a score 5-6; he won the 12th game and then won the tie breaker 7-1.

Nick Primavrera played at 2nd singles and won 6-2, 6-4 against a solid hitter. This was Nick's second win in singles; as he normally plays 1st doubles.

Nick Finn and Brenden Popson moved up to number 1 doubles (normally 2nd doubles) they won 6-2, 6-2 and were the first match finished.

Daniel Becht and Drew Thomas teamed together to win at 2nd doubles. They have won 3 matches at 2nd doubles in a row. Their scores were 6-2, 6-4.

Next up for the Pioneers is the Silver Creek Invitational on Saturday.

Providence Sweep Charlestown



The Providence Boys Tennis Team Sweep every match both varsity and junior varsity at Community Park, Providence Home Courts, from Charlestown. This was the second match in a row that the varsity won by a 5 – 0 count. All varsity matches were won in straight sets. JV played a new line-up with several players in new positions.


Travis Cunningham recorded the only 6-0, 6-0 victory with Travis completing his match first. Drew Thomas at number 3 singles and number two double both won one set at 6-0. Drew won 6-0, 6-3 and Nick Finn and Brenden Popson at two doubles won 6-0, 6-1. Pete Andres won his number 1 singles match at 6-1, 6-1. First singles of Nick Primavrera and Jacob Kraft won 6-1, 6-3. All the varsity players had dominating games and many had complete sets in which they dominated.


The JV were lead by the first double team of Daniel Becht and Joe Solis winning 8 – 0. This was the first match for this combo. Andrew Jerdonek played at 1st singles in won at 8 – 4. Derek Benebig played second singles and won 8 – 6. Weston Spalding won 8 – 2 at third singles and fourth singles was won by Ryan Juodilis at an impressive 8 – 1 score. Second doubles of Steven Cabezas and Jacob Samples got down early being behind by a 4 – 1 score before they rallied winning 7 of the next 8 games to win 8 – 5.


Next match is Thursday against Madison at Community Park.

Providence wins 2 and loses 1 at Columbus North Invitational

On Saturday the team played three matches at the Columbus Invitational. The first match of the day was against the very strong host team and Providence lost 5-0. Each match was lost in straight sets. While the loss was tough, with many long rallies by all the players, the scores in general were very lopsided.

For this match Nick Primavrera played singles and our normal number 2 doubles team played one and Drew Thomas and Daniel Becht teamed together at second doubles. Columbus North won each of their three matches and the Pioneers had only one loss.

The remainder of the day went much better for Pioneers

In the second match of the day the team faced Martinsville. The match was won 3-2 with wins at first and second singles and second doubles. In a tournament like this a third set is played as a super tiebreaker (tiebreaker to 10).

Pete Andres won a fairly easy match at 6-2, 6-1.

Travis Cunningham came back after only his second loss of the season and won 6-2, 6-2.

Nick Primavrera lost 0-6, 2-6.

Number one doubles lost in the third set tiebreaker having won the first set 6-3 before losing the second set 4-6. They lost the tiebreaker 6-10.

At number two doubles Drew and Daniel won in a third set tiebreaker; they won the first 6-3 and dropped the second set 0-6, they won a very close tiebreaker 14-12.

In the third pairing of the day against Oldenburg Academy the Pioneers recorded their first 5-0 win of the season. Again two of the matches went to a third set tiebreaker.

Pete Andres was pushed hard in the second set but won 6-3, 7-5.

Travis won the first set 6-3 and lost the second 4-6 he won a long tough tiebreaker at 14-12. This was a very hard fought match.

Nick Primavrera recorded his first singles victory as a varsity tennis player (Nick is normally a doubles player); he won the first set 6-4 but lost the second 2-6. He won the tiebreaker 11-9.

First doubles dominated the Oldenburg Academy team 6-2, 6-0.

The second doubles tandem won 6-1, 6-2.

Drew won his first 2 varsity matches of his young career today. Two of our managers traveled with the team and were a great help to the players and coaches. Also in attendance was former girl's player Rachel Gish (a student at IU). As usually we had great parent support, good food and drink under our standard blue tents.

Providence Defeats Scottsburg 3-2


Providence won a very close match with both doubles teams needing three sets to win. The final results were determined by 6-1 victories in the third set by each of the doubles teams. The final deciding match was won by 2nd doubles team.

Pete Andres played a strong match against Everitt but lost 2-6, 4-6. Pete rallied in the second set from 4-1 and played some of his best tennis of the season in doing so.

Travis Cunningham got back on his winning ways winning 6-1, 6-0. Travis dominated the match from the beginning.

Drew Thomas playing third singles and lost 2-6, 4-6 in a match that was closer than the score indicates. Drew worked very hard and had a lead in the second set before losing the match.

Nick Primavrera and Jacob Kraft in 1st doubles won the first set 6-2 and then dropped the second set 2-6. They came out after the split set break and dominated for 6-1 win.

The second doubles team of Nick Finn and Brenden Popson won the first set in a very close tiebreaker and dropped the second set 4-6. In the final set of the match they won 6-1 and dominated nearly every game.

Scottsburg came into the match ranked 8th in the district. The Pioneers played most likely the best match of the season as a team, while individuals and doubles team may have played better individually, the team performed at a high level in all positions.


The Junior Varsity lost the 3 singles matches and won both doubles matches. The junior varsity played a different line-up at four of the five positions.

Number 2 Doubles wins Mt. Vernon Title


The numbers two doubles team won that position in the Mt. Vernon Invitational Tournament on Saturday and the team finished 2nd in the tournament. 1st Doubles finished second, 1st and 2nd single finished 3rd.

Number two doubles of Nick Finn and Brenden Popson rallied to win the finals in a second set tiebreaker and then win the third set in a super tiebreaker. They were the only Providence position that went undefeated for the tournament.

Travis Cunningham lost his first match of the season, but came back to win the third place match.

Pete Andres lost his first round match to a very strong player from Mt. Vernon; but the last two matches to finish 3rd.

Nick Primavrera and Jacob Kraft lost in the finals to a good Evansville Central doubles team.

The Pioneers will face a good Scottsburg Team this week.

Providence Defeated Clarksville 4 - 1

Providence won its first match of the season defeating Clarksville 4 – 1, losing only at third singles.


Pete Andres won at first singles 6-1, 6-2; Pete started strong and played a very good match in all aspects of the game.


Travis Cunningham won with the same score as Pete. Travis played a strong match while struggling a little with his serve.


Daniel Becht made his first varsity singles start and dropped a close match 6-3, 6-3.


Number 1 doubles of Nick Primavrera and Jacob Kraft made their first start as a team this season and won 6-1, 6-0 in the quickest match of the day.


Number 2 doubles of Nick Finn and Brenden Popson also made their first start as a team this season and had a perfect match winning 6-0, 6-0 they quickly followed the number 1 doubles team off the court.


Our doubles teams played really well and brought many of the aspects of recent practice onto the courts.


In the only reserve match of the day Joe Solis lost 4-0, 4-5 (6-8), 0-1 (12-12). His match was the last to finish and was nearly stopped due to wet courts.


Next up for the Pioneers will be New Albany on Friday.
