I found out on Monday night that Kara was honorable mention Academic All State. We also learned that Kelsey and Megan were honorable mention all-state in doubles and Jacqueline received the same honor in singles.

In three years we have had 4 honorable mentions Academic All State and seven playing positions that were honorable mention All State and also All District.

At the District 5 (southern Indiana) coaches meeting on June 1, three Providence returning players received all district recognition. Junior to be, Jacqueline Hollkamp was one of the 16 players recognized in singles, she finished the season with a 15 and 7 record, she won the New Albany Invitational and was second at the Delphi Invitational. Top wins include New Albany twice and Corydon Central (Uhl is still in the individual state tournament). The number one doubles team of Senior to be Megan Jakoby and Junior to be Kelsey Haas was one of eight doubles (actual 9 due to a tie) teams selected for the district honor. Haas was 14 and 4 in doubles, Jakoby was 9 and 3 in doubles, and together they were 7 and 2. There losses were to Jeffrsonville (still in the individual state tournament) in a three set, 3 hour and 30 minute match and to Greenwood (KY) in three sets, 3 hour plus match. Greenwood was a final 8 team in Kentucky. They won the Delphi Invitational and Haas was a member of the team (with Hillary Ernstberger) that won the New Albany Invitational. Top wins for the team were over Guerin and Silver Creek.

They bring a strong foundation for the 2012 season, which will return six letter winners.

Pioneer's finish second at Delphi Invitational

The tournament started nearly 2 hours late because of rain, but the weekend provided to be sucessful for the Lady Pioneers. The team finished second to Guerin out of eight schools.
The Pioneers won first place in number one doubles. Finished 2nd at number 1 singles and lost in the semi-finals at number 2 doubles.
Megan and Kelsey played very well and beat a very good doubles team in the semifinals from Guerin, they then defeated a team from Rensselaer to win the championship. They are pictured above with their medals.
Jacqueline lost in the finals to an excellent player also from Guerin. She had two very good wins to reach the final.
Hilary and Kara won there first match againist the host school before losing in the semifinals to another team from Guerin.
Freshman Tori lost her first match in a three set match with the last set being a super tie breaker . She then came back to defeat a player from Seeger, before losing to a player from the host school.
The tournament was 200 miles away, but it allowed the team to see teams outside of their region and they preformed very well in the 8 team tournament.

On an afternoon that threatened rain, all but one match was completed.

At 1st Singles Jacqueline Hollkamp degeated Jessica Riley 6-1, 6-1.
At 2nd Singles Megan Jakoby was leading 6-2, 4-3 when rain forced an end to the match.
At 3rd Singles Tori Bonfantino lost to Chloe Stephens 6-3, 6-3.
1st doubles of Senior Hillary Ernstberger and Soph. Kelsey Haas won over Baily Duggan and Sharon Garcia 6-0, 6-2.
2nd doubles won by default.

Jacqueline played very well today and established control from the beginnning. Megan was playing a very good match until the rain forced an end to the match. 1st doubles dominated most of the match and the games they lost were due to unforced errors in general.

Providence Girls Tennis Team has played three dual matches winning two and losing the other one 2 to 3 to Bedford North Lawrenced (ranked at the time). They came in second at the New Albany Invitational losing by four points to the host schools. Both schools had the same record, Providence had 2 firsts (undefeated) a second (lost int he finals) and two players/teams who lost in the first round and won the remaining matches (one lost each). New Albany had the same records but their two losses came in the second round instead, therefore they finished third and our girls finished 4th. Jacqueline Hollkamp won at first singles as did the number 1 doubles team of Hillary Ernstberger and Kelsey Haas. Megan Jakoby finished second at number 2 singles. Tori Bongantino finshed 4th at number 3 singles and number 2 doubles finished 4th, composed of Kara Garcia and Maggie Bremmer. During the Jasper tournament most players got in two matches before the rain struck. We had some very good performances but no brackets completed all their matches...thus no final standings.

The Pioneers will host their own tournament on April 29th at Community Park in New Albany. The tournament will feature teams from Christian Academy of Indiana, Southwestern, Gibson Southern, Corydon and Providence. Matches begin at 10 AM.

The Junior Varsity team played well at Jasper and defeated South Central in a dual match.

Week 2 of 2011 Season

This week promises to be a very busy one for Providence Girl Tennis Team. They will play a total of 8 matches, which is 1/3 of their schedule. On Monday 4/11 they will play Jeffersonville at JHS at 4:00 PM On Tuesday 4/12 they will complete the New Albany Invitational which was rained out. They won their first match in 1st singles 6-0, 6-0 and were leading in three other matches when the rain washed out the rest of the day. 2nd singles received a bye in the first round. On Wednesday 4/13 they travel to Jennings County, this is the first match between these two schools. On Friday 4/15 they will play the opening round of the Jasper Invitational. On Saturday 4/16 the varsity will play the final two rounds and JV will play the entire tournament. The team is currently 0 and 1 with a 3-2 loss to Bedford North Lawrence. The team won at 1st and 2nd singles.

Providence Sweeps Borden 5-0

After dropping three close matches at the Columbus North Invitational the team got back on the winning way defeating Borden at Borden 5-0 and the JV's won 3-1.

Pete won in a convincing fashion 6-0, 6-2 at first singles.

Brenden won second singles 6-1, 6-3; he played one of his better matches in recent weeks, with much better ball control.

Nolan started slow in his match but dominated in the second set to win 6-4, 6-1 at 3^rd singles.

Daniel and Nick started quickly winning the first set 6-0, but had several unforced errors in the second set after taking a big lead; the second set was won in a tie breaker with a score of 7-2 for the win at first doubles.

Joe and Andrew played second doubles and started slow with numerous bad hits, before they got their hitting together as well as their play, they won 6-4, 6-0.

JV Matches:

Thomas Boly played first JV singles and won 8-1; Louis Garcia played second singles for the JV and won 8-1 also.

In doubles Derek Benebig and Weston Spaulding won 1^st doubles 8-0; the lone lost for the Pioneers was at second doubles which lost 8-5 played by Brock Hayden and Justin Hughes.

Pioneers defeat Charlestown 4 - 1

Providence Boys played with a slightly modified line-up and won all the singles matches and the 2^nd doubles position. The Pioneers also swept the three JVs matches losing only one game.

Pete and Brenden both won their matches without losing a single game at 1^st and 2^nd singles, Daniel played third singles and won 6-3, 6-2. Weston Spaulding won his first varsity teaming with Derek Benebig in the 2^nd doubles position. They won 6-4, 6-3 in a match with lots of long rallies.

Reed Fansley and Thomas Boly teamed together to win the JV doubles match 6-1. Garrett Braun and Justin Hughes played singles and each won without losing a game.

Providence defeats Martinsville and Batesville at Columbus North Invitational

In a day filled with lots of rain and matches starting at about 3 PM (six hours late) for the first round, ended up being a very successful day for boy's tennis team. The first round of the tournament had Providence playing Martinsville, matches got started around noon (scheduled to start at 9 AM), but by the time three or four games had been played the players were called from the courts because of moisture. Columbus North coaches and team got the courts dry again and play resumed around 3 PM.

Providence defeated Martinsville 4 – 1, 1^st singles, 3^rd singles, 1^st and 2^nd doubles won for the Pioneers, all in straight sets. All the players did a good job in the win. Both doubles team had some of their best sets of the season.

Providence then defeated Batesville by the same 4-1 score winning the same positions. The number one doubles teams were very dominate in this match winning 6-1, 6-0. The most interesting match was at 2^nd doubles and was the only match that went three sets (using a super tie breaker for the third set). 2^nd doubles dropped way behind early in the first set, but rallied to take the set to a tie breaker losing it 6-8. In the second set they again dropped way behind (5-2) only to rally again to take it to a tie breaker, which they won 7-0. For the third set a super tie breaker to ten by two was played. They fell behind early but rallied to win the super tie breaker and the match 10 – 6. It was a great effort by Andrew and Joe.

Because of darkness the third match for the day between the Pioneers and host Bulldogs was suspended and it will hopefully be rescheduled. Both teams stood at 2-0 and the winner will determine the overall invitational winner.

Providence Sweeps Scottsburg

The Pioneers varsity sweep Scottsburg 5-0 and the JV lost only one match. Brenden Popson (number 2 singles) and the number 1 doubles team lead the way dropping only a combined three games in the two matches. Pete Andres had a good match while fighting the effects of a cold at first singles. Nolan Carrico played a solid match playing back at the number three singles after a run in doubles. The number two doubles team had the only three set match.

The JV team lost only at third singles and lost no more than four games in any of the other pro-set matches.

Providence Defeated it’s Cross Town Rival Clarksville

Providence defeat Clarksville 4 – 1 with Derek Benebig winning his varsity match of his career. The Pioneers shifted their line-up due to the absence of the Clarksville number 1 singles player. This allowed the Pioneers to rest several players before a weekend tournament and match with New Albany tomorrow.

Brenden Popson played first singles and lost 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Nolan Carrico played second singles and struggled in the first set winning 6-4, but played a much better second set winning 6-0. Nolan got a slow start and it took him several games to get into his groove, but played well after that.

Derek Benebig played third singles and had a very good match; he struggled a little to finish the match. He was leading 5 - 2 in the second set before dropping two games in a row. He won the match 6-2, 6-4.

Nick Finn and Andrew Jerdonek played first doubles; they played a good first set, but lost some focus in the second set. They won their match 6-2, 6-4.

There was no second doubles played due to Clarksville not having enough players, so Providence won that match.

Pioneers Finish Second in New Albany Invitational

After two days of tennis the Pioneers finished second in the New Albany Invitational behind the host team. While individually the Pioneers did not record any first place finishes as the Bulldogs sweep the tournament they did have two seconds, a third and fourth.

Pete Andres lost in the finals but had a very strong performance in all three of his matches posting wins over Lanesville and Eastern.

Number one doubles of Nick Finn and Andrew Jerdonek won their first two matches beating teams from Clarksville and Scottsburg before falling in the finals to a team from New Albany.

Brendan Popson finished third at second singles winning his first and last match but losing his second match to the number two singles player from New Albany. He defeated players from Charlestown and Lanesville.

Freshman Nolan Carrico had some of the longest matches of the tournament, he lost his first match of the tournament but won the last two to finish 4^th. He defeated players from Scottsburg and Clarksville. It was a good effort for the freshman in his first varsity tournament.

Number two doubles of Daniel Becht and Joe Solis won their first match defeating team a team from Eastern, but lost their next two matches.

Overall we had a good effort from all the players.

The Junior Varsity will play the varsity of South Central on Monday and there will be matches against Clarksville and New Albany on Thursday and Friday this week and the Mt. Vernon Invitational on Saturday.

Providence Boys Tennis 2010

The boy's tennis season will begin on Thursday with a scrimmage with Bedford North Lawrence. The scrimmage gives the boys a chance to hit against another school and gives the coaches the chance to look at how well players perform against another school. In the scrimmage you will see timed play in three sessions. The first two sessions will be varsity players and the third will be JV. The scrimmage will be played at BNL with the courts located behind the school.

Currently there are 15 boys on the team. The team has been in challenge matches for most of the practice to this point. The team has 4 managers. This site will contain discussions about matches and tournaments as well as pictures of the players.

Courtney and Hanna Individual Doubles Sectional Champs

Yesterday when Floyd Central defeated Jeffersonville 5 – 0 it also meant that Courtney Murphy and Hanna Gish were the individual sectional doubles champs. The number 1 doubles team defeated Jeffersonville in the team sectional, but since the team lost, they moved into the individual tournament. No other doubles team was undefeated except those playing in the Floyd Central Regional. When on Tuesday Floyd Central beat Silver Creek that eliminated that doubles team and when Jeff's number 1 doubles team beat New Albany that eliminated another team. With Floyd Central winning the regional, their doubles team remains in the team tournament and is undefeated.

Next up will be playing on June 5^th at Carmel High School near Indianapolis in what is known as an individual doubles regional. There is the potential for two matches that day with the first beginning at 10 AM. If they win the second match will be at Park Tutor High School in Indianapolis at 2 PM. Potential opponents will come from winners at Vincennes Lincoln, Seymour, and Jasper regionals. The winner of these two regional matches will then advance to the state individual doubles finals to be held June 11^th and 12^th.

This will be Hanna's first appearance in the individual doubles regional, Courtney played at this level last year with Emily DiNoto. Hanna and Courtney are currently 13 and 8.

Pink Match

Providence High School Girls Tennis Team will be hosting a 'Pink Match' on Friday, May 14^th in support of Breast Cancer Research.

We would like to invite you to attend the match against Greenwood (KY) High School at 5:30 at Community Park in New Albany.

Donations for Breast Cancer Research will be accepted at the match. The team will be wearing pink t-shirts, have pink grips on their rackets and will play with pink tennis balls.

We hope you will be able to join us for this match.

Providence defeats Seymour 3 - 2

Jacqueline Hollkamp played another impressive match at 2^nd singles defeating her opponent quickly at 6-0, 6-0.

Both doubles teams continued their impressive play each having a 6-0 set. One doubles started strong winning 6-0, before having a close second set which they won 6-4, including the final three games.

Second doubles played a relatively close match in the first set and then played outstanding doubles in the second set to win 6-3, 6-0.

The two longest match of the day was at 1^st and 3 rd singles. Kara Garcia played the longest match losing 6-4, 6-4. Kara played an excellent match and gave her all just not quit able to win either set. She fell behind in the first set before making it close and the second set was close the entire match.

Substitute player Maggie Bremmer lost at number 1 singles 7-5, 6-1. I was very impressed the way Maggie kept the ball in play against a much more experienced opponent, she gave all energy on every point.

I was very pleased with the play of all the ladies on the varsity; they all really gave a strong performance.

Pioneers win 4 – 1 over Corydon

Providence defeated Corydon at Corydon; the Pioneers won 2^nd and 3^rd singles and both doubles and was leading at 1^st singles before retiring Stephanie Smith.

Freshman Jacqueline Hollkamp led the Pioneer victory with a 6-0, 6-0 score. She was the first finished and had great control today.

The Senior doubles team of Hanna Gish and Courtney Murphy won handily at 6-1, 6-1.They played some aggressive doubles and had a good net game today.

2^nd doubles was the third victory for the Pioneers, struggling with control and a slow start they won the first set 7-5, but coming out in the second set with much better control, power and game plan they won at 6-1.

The final point for Providence was won by Kara Garcia at 3^rd singles 6-2, 6-3. This was Kara's second varsity singles win in her career. Her first victory came late last week against Charlestown. She has been making some really good progress for the team.

I was very proud of the way the team responded and other than 2^nd doubles getting a slow start in the first set, everyone played very well.

The Pioneers finished a successful week defeating the visiting Pirates 5 – 0. The Pioneers were a little tired from having play three match this week prior to the match today and arrived home late last night from playing Jasper.

Kara Garcia recorded her first varsity singles win in the match losing the first set 6-4 and stormed back to win the second 6-0, she jumped ahead in the third 5-1 only to lose three games before winning the set 6-4. The team rushed the court after the match and she even got a piggyback ride.

Stephanie Smith played a solid match winning 6-1, 6-1.

Freshman Jacqueline Hollkamp had a tough first set winning 7-5 but dominated in the second 6-0.

The number one doubles of Hanna Gish and Courtney Murphy won 6-2, 6-2 and second doubles of Hillary Ernstberger and Kelsey Haas won 6-0, 6-1.

Next match is at Sacred Heart Academy on Monday.

Providence Defeats Salem 4 - 1

Providence won their second match in two days defeating Salem at Community Park. Senior Stephanie Smith led the way for the Pioneers winning at number 1 singles 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Jacqueline Hollkamp won 6-0, 6-1. Junior Kara Garcia put a great come back in the first set being down 4-1 to take the first set to a tiebreaker which she lost 7 - 3 and then she lost the second set 6-0. This was the best match that Garcia has played on the season; the match was closer than the score indicated because Kara was the last player off the court. In doubles first and second doubles both won. Hanna Gish and Courtney Murphy won 6-4, 7-5 and second doubles of Hillary Ernstberger and Kelsey Haas won 6-2, 6-3. The doubles continues to improve each time they go on to the court. First doubles struggled a little but had solid play and continue to serve very well. The Pioneers are 4 and 2 with Jasper on Wednesday and Charlestown on Thursday.

Providence defeats Clarksville 3-2

The Pioneers defeated their cross town rivals 3-2 on Monday. The team was lead by the efforts of their number 1 doubles team. The team of Hanna Gish and Courtney Murphy lost only one game winning the match 6-1, 6-0. This team is getting better every time they take the courts. Freshman Jacqueline Hollkamp played an outstanding match against a Clarksville freshman winning 6-3, 6-2. Jacqueline has been working really hard in practice and it showed today on the court. The final victory of the day was by the second doubles team of junior Hillary Ernstberger and freshman Kelsey Haas winning 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. They lead most of the first set, but fell behind near the end fought back to take the set to 6-6; then in the tiebreaker they fell behind again, but then played some outstanding to go from down 5-2 to winning the tiebreaker 7-5. In the second set they came out and continued their good play, but lost focus and the match got close before they finished the second set at 6-4. Stephanie Smith played at first singles losing to one of the area's best players 6-2, 6-1. Kara Garcia had a tough match losing 6-0, 6-0.

Pioneers Even Their Record in Dual Matches

Providence evened their dual match record at 2 and 2 by defeating North Harrison and earning their first home court victory of the season. The lady Pioneers were led by freshman Jacqueline Hollkamp and seniors Courtney Murphy and Hanna Gish. The final point was earned by the second doubles team of Kelsey Haas and Hillary Ernstberger. In the quickest match of the day number one doubles won 6-0, 6-1, the senior tandem played some of their best to date in the victory. Jacqueline playing at number one singles dispatched her appoint at 6-1, 6-1. Jacqueline used a diverse ground game to win the match. The second doubles team won the first set easily at 6-1, but struggled somewhat in the second set falling behind 4-2 before winning the last four games, with the final three in a dominating fashion. Kara Garcia and Maggie Bremmer also played in the varsity contest.

Allison Primvera won at JV singles and Sarah Fiderspiel and Kristin Simms won at JV doubles.

The JV team will play on Tuesday at South Central. The next varsity match is Saturday at 2 PM at Community Park.

Providence finishes second in New Albany Invitational

The Providence girl's tennis team finished second in the annual New Albany Invitation, losing to the host school. Three Providence players advanced to the finals of the tournament with Freshman Jacqueline Hollkamp winning the 2^nd singles tournament. Senior Captain Stephanie Smith lost to Clarksville number 1 singles player and Freshman Kelsey Haas lost a three set match to Clarksville 3^rd singles player. The number 1 doubles team finished third in the tournament losing in the semi-final round to the eventual number 1 doubles champions of New Albany in a very close match. The second doubles team finished 7^th in the tournament.

There were many highlights in the tournament. Stephanie Smith played one of her best matches of the season in the semi-final round victory of 6-0, 6-0 over Christian Academy. Assistant Coach Scott Gurgol was most impressed with her play in her second match of the day. Jacqueline Hollkamp very simply played better in each round of the tournament and had an impressive victory in the finals over a very good New Albany player. Kelsey Haas played her first two matches in outstanding fashion to advance to the finals of the 3^rd singles draw; she won the first set at 7-5 but lost the second at 4-6 and dropped a ten point tie-breaker for the third set. Providence's number 1 doubles team of Hanna Gish and Courtney Murphy played a solid match against Clarksville in the first round, but fell in a close match to New Albany in the semi-finals 4-6, 6-7 (5-7), in there losing effort they still played solid tennis. In the number 2 doubles position JV singles player Pyria Patel played in her first varsity match in doubles with Hillary Ernstberger the duo lost the match to North Harrison. In the second and third match Kara Garcia played with Hillary and they lost the first back draw match to Henryville, before winning their third match 8-0 against Christian Academy.

Next up for the Pioneers is Jeffersonville on Monday at Jeff.

Providence Sweeps Christian Academy

On a cold, windy afternoon the lady Pioneers won their first match of the young season by defeating the Warriors on their home courts and losing only a total of 8 games. With the wind blowing at 20 mph and the temperature in the low 50s the Pioneers wearing their new long sleeve playing shirts took control early and never looked back to win their first match of the season against one loss. Senior Doubles team of Hanna Gish and Courtney Murphy won 6-0, 6-0 and played aggressively in the very windy conditions. Senior Stephanie Smith lost only one game in the first set to win 6-1, 6-0; Steph played an outstanding match against a nice hitter. The other two singles matches were won by Freshmen Jacqueline Hollkamp at 6-2, 6-0 and Kelsey Haas at 6-0, 6-1. The closest match of the day was recorded by the second doubles team composed of Juniors Kara Garcia and Hillary Ernstburger with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. A single JV match was played by Kristin Simms and Sarah Fiderspiel and they won 8-0.

This was a good win by the entire team, each player improved from the loss earlier in the week, but each player still can play much better. Hopefully we will have less wind on Saturday at the New Albany Invitational and the girls can concentrate more on tennis and less on the playing conditions.

Pioneers fall to Bedford North Lawrence in opening match

In a very windy later afternoon match, the Providence Girls dropped a very close match to Bedford North Lawrence Stars 4 - 1. While the score may not indicate the closeness of the match, each position was very competitive. The highlight of the day was the first match for freshman Jacqueline Hollkamp in which she won over her opponent 6-1, 6-4. This win proved to be the only win for the Pioneers in their first match of the season. Senior Stephanie Smith lost 7-5, 6-4. Senior doubles team of Hanna Gish and Courtney Murphy lost the first set in a tiebreaker, in which they got down early rallied back before losing the tiebreaker 7-5, the match score was 7-6, 6-1. The number two doubles team of Juniors Hillary Ernstburger and Kara Garcia lost the first and third sets but won the second set, the match score was 6-0, 4-6, 6-0. Freshman Kelsey Haas played the number three position and lost a third set tiebreaker which was played because of darkness. With the third set tied 3-3 the coaches agreed that a tiebreaker to finish the set and match was in order because of darkness, with fans hardly able to see the ball Kelsey lost a very close tiebreaker and the match, her score was 6-2, 5-7, 4-3.

The next match for Providence will be against rival Christian Academy on April 8^th at 4 PM at CAI.

The 2010 Girls Tennis schedule is finally completed. The schedule contains a new tournament and some new opponents for this season. The Pioneers will play in the King of the Bluegrass tournament in Louisville, featuring teams from multiple states. The team will be in the A division of the tournament. Bedford North Lawrence and Jasper have also been added to the schedule. Stephanie Smith Signs with USI

Providence Athletic Director Mickey Golembeski announces that the Pioneer's Stephanie Smith signs an Athletic & Academic Scholarship to the University of Southern Indiana to play Tennis at the NCAA Division II Evansville School.

Stephanie has been playing tennis since the age of 6; competing in many local, state & regional tournaments. While being a two-sport varsity athlete, in volleyball & tennis, she has concentrated primarily on tennis. Playing #1 doubles her freshman and sophomore years, then moving to #1 singles for her junior and senior years, helped Providence win 3 Sectional Titles during her high school career

She is excited to continue her career at USI as a screaming eagle. She also feels that not only USI tennis, but the academics, is a great fit for her. She should be able to step right in and be a great addition to the USI Tennis Program.

USI coach, Keely Porter, enters her 19th season as the head coach of the University of Southern Indiana women's tennis team. She has led the Eagles to two NCAA Division II Tournament appearances and 12 top-four finishes in the GLVC.

North Harrison falls to the Pioneers 4 - 1

In the next to last regular season match the Pioneers defeated North Harrison 4 – 1 without two of the regular starters.

Pete Andres went out and dominated at first singles winning 6 – 0, 6 – 0. Pete played very aggressive and won most every point. He was the first off the courts today.

Senior Nick Primavrera played second singles and had an impressive win at 6 – 1, 6 – 2. Nick played a very controlled match and did a great job in position serving.

Andrew Jerdonek played 3^rd singles and recorded his second varsity win. He won the first set 7 – 5, but trailed much of the second set before a rally that created a tiebreaker which he won 7 – 5, for a second set 7 – 6 win.

Nick Finn and Brenden Popson moved up to 1^st doubles and played a tough match to record a 7 -5, 6 – 3 victory, which was the deciding point.

Drew Thomas and Daniel Becht played at number 2 doubles and lost a close match 2 – 6, 4 – 6.

In JV matches Joe Solis won 8 – 1 at 1^st singles and Jacob Samples won 8 – 5 at 2^nd singles. Joe played an outstanding match and Jacob rallied for the win. Both of the JV doubles teams lost very close matches.

Providence defeats Borden 4 – 1

Providence defeated Borden at Community Park. This was the last home match of the season and the seniors on the team were recognized. Our seniors were Captain Travis Cunningham, Nick Primavera, Jacob Kraft and Drew Thomas; along with head manager Hanna Gish and Sammie Riggs.

Pete Andres won a good match at number 1 singles 6 – 3, 6 – 4. Pete played a very controlled match.

Travis Cunningham at number two singles, lost one game in route to a 6 – 0, 6 – 1 victory. Travis dominated every aspect of the match.

Drew Thomas played third and lost a very close match 6 – 4, 7 – 5. It looked as if Drew would win the second set taking the match into a third set, before his opponent rallied to win the second set.

Number 1 doubles of Nick Primavera and Jacob Kraft played a tough first set, but dominated the second. They won 6 – 4, 6 – 1.

Number 2 doubles of Nick Finn and Brenden Popson started strong winning the first set 6 – 0, they struggled slightly to win the second set 6 – 4.

The doubles team of Joe Solis and Daniel Becht won a reserve doubles match 8 – 1. Andrew Jerdonek won a reserve singles match 8 – 6.

Providence Wins Third Straight Match in a Sweep

Providence Boys Tennis Team won over Madison 5 – 0 winning all matches in straight sets. Southern Indiana Catholic shared the courts with the Pioneers and swept New Washington Middle School 5 – 0. The Pioneers rested two of their seniors thus having every player playing in a new position (from their normal place) except Pete Andres who played at number 1 singles.

The highlight of the day was when Andrew Jerdonek won at 3^rd singles in his first varsity start. Andrew won 6-2, 6-4 against a solid number 3 from Madison. Andrew played a very good match and did everything his coaches asked of him.

Pete Andres at number 1 singles was pushed to a second set tie breaker. He won the first set 6-3 and fell behind in the second with a score 5-6; he won the 12^th game and then won the tie breaker 7-1.

Nick Primavrera played at 2^nd singles and won 6-2, 6-4 against a solid hitter. This was Nick's second win in singles; as he normally plays 1^st doubles.

Nick Finn and Brenden Popson moved up to number 1 doubles (normally 2^nd doubles) they won 6-2, 6-2 and were the first match finished.

Daniel Becht and Drew Thomas teamed together to win at 2^nd doubles. They have won 3 matches at 2^nd doubles in a row. Their scores were 6-2, 6-4.

Next up for the Pioneers is the Silver Creek Invitational on Saturday.

Providence Sweep Charlestown

The Providence Boys Tennis Team Sweep every match both varsity and junior varsity at Community Park, Providence Home Courts, from Charlestown. This was the second match in a row that the varsity won by a 5 – 0 count. All varsity matches were won in straight sets. JV played a new line-up with several players in new positions.

Travis Cunningham recorded the only 6-0, 6-0 victory with Travis completing his match first. Drew Thomas at number 3 singles and number two double both won one set at 6-0. Drew won 6-0, 6-3 and Nick Finn and Brenden Popson at two doubles won 6-0, 6-1. Pete Andres won his number 1 singles match at 6-1, 6-1. First singles of Nick Primavrera and Jacob Kraft won 6-1, 6-3. All the varsity players had dominating games and many had complete sets in which they dominated.

The JV were lead by the first double team of Daniel Becht and Joe Solis winning 8 – 0. This was the first match for this combo. Andrew Jerdonek played at 1^st singles in won at 8 – 4. Derek Benebig played second singles and won 8 – 6. Weston Spalding won 8 – 2 at third singles and fourth singles was won by Ryan Juodilis at an impressive 8 – 1 score. Second doubles of Steven Cabezas and Jacob Samples got down early being behind by a 4 – 1 score before they rallied winning 7 of the next 8 games to win 8 – 5.

Next match is Thursday against Madison at Community Park.

Providence wins 2 and loses 1 at Columbus North Invitational

On Saturday the team played three matches at the Columbus Invitational. The first match of the day was against the very strong host team and Providence lost 5-0. Each match was lost in straight sets. While the loss was tough, with many long rallies by all the players, the scores in general were very lopsided.

For this match Nick Primavrera played singles and our normal number 2 doubles team played one and Drew Thomas and Daniel Becht teamed together at second doubles. Columbus North won each of their three matches and the Pioneers had only one loss.

The remainder of the day went much better for Pioneers

In the second match of the day the team faced Martinsville. The match was won 3-2 with wins at first and second singles and second doubles. In a tournament like this a third set is played as a super tiebreaker (tiebreaker to 10).

Pete Andres won a fairly easy match at 6-2, 6-1.

Travis Cunningham came back after only his second loss of the season and won 6-2, 6-2.

Nick Primavrera lost 0-6, 2-6.

Number one doubles lost in the third set tiebreaker having won the first set 6-3 before losing the second set 4-6. They lost the tiebreaker 6-10.

At number two doubles Drew and Daniel won in a third set tiebreaker; they won the first 6-3 and dropped the second set 0-6, they won a very close tiebreaker 14-12.

In the third pairing of the day against Oldenburg Academy the Pioneers recorded their first 5-0 win of the season. Again two of the matches went to a third set tiebreaker.

Pete Andres was pushed hard in the second set but won 6-3, 7-5.

Travis won the first set 6-3 and lost the second 4-6 he won a long tough tiebreaker at 14-12. This was a very hard fought match.

Nick Primavrera recorded his first singles victory as a varsity tennis player (Nick is normally a doubles player); he won the first set 6-4 but lost the second 2-6. He won the tiebreaker 11-9.

First doubles dominated the Oldenburg Academy team 6-2, 6-0.

The second doubles tandem won 6-1, 6-2.

Drew won his first 2 varsity matches of his young career today. Two of our managers traveled with the team and were a great help to the players and coaches. Also in attendance was former girl's player Rachel Gish (a student at IU). As usually we had great parent support, good food and drink under our standard blue tents.

Providence Defeats Scottsburg 3-2

Providence won a very close match with both doubles teams needing three sets to win. The final results were determined by 6-1 victories in the third set by each of the doubles teams. The final deciding match was won by 2^nd doubles team.

Pete Andres played a strong match against Everitt but lost 2-6, 4-6. Pete rallied in the second set from 4-1 and played some of his best tennis of the season in doing so.

Travis Cunningham got back on his winning ways winning 6-1, 6-0. Travis dominated the match from the beginning.

Drew Thomas playing third singles and lost 2-6, 4-6 in a match that was closer than the score indicates. Drew worked very hard and had a lead in the second set before losing the match.

Nick Primavrera and Jacob Kraft in 1^st doubles won the first set 6-2 and then dropped the second set 2-6. They came out after the split set break and dominated for 6-1 win.

The second doubles team of Nick Finn and Brenden Popson won the first set in a very close tiebreaker and dropped the second set 4-6. In the final set of the match they won 6-1 and dominated nearly every game.

Scottsburg came into the match ranked 8^th in the district. The Pioneers played most likely the best match of the season as a team, while individuals and doubles team may have played better individually, the team performed at a high level in all positions.

The Junior Varsity lost the 3 singles matches and won both doubles matches. The junior varsity played a different line-up at four of the five positions.

Next up for the team is the Columbus Invitational on Saturday.

Number 2 Doubles wins Mt. Vernon Title

The numbers two doubles team won that position in the Mt. Vernon Invitational Tournament on Saturday and the team finished 2^nd in the tournament. 1^st Doubles finished second, 1^st and 2^nd single finished 3^rd.

Number two doubles of Nick Finn and Brenden Popson rallied to win the finals in a second set tiebreaker and then win the third set in a super tiebreaker. They were the only Providence position that went undefeated for the tournament.

Travis Cunningham lost his first match of the season, but came back to win the third place match.

Pete Andres lost his first round match to a very strong player from Mt. Vernon; but the last two matches to finish 3^rd.

Nick Primavrera and Jacob Kraft lost in the finals to a good Evansville Central doubles team.

The Pioneers will face a good Scottsburg Team this week.

Providence Defeated Clarksville 4 - 1

Providence won its first match of the season defeating Clarksville 4 – 1, losing only at third singles.

Pete Andres won at first singles 6-1, 6-2; Pete started strong and played a very good match in all aspects of the game.

Travis Cunningham won with the same score as Pete. Travis played a strong match while struggling a little with his serve.

Daniel Becht made his first varsity singles start and dropped a close match 6-3, 6-3.

Number 1 doubles of Nick Primavrera and Jacob Kraft made their first start as a team this season and won 6-1, 6-0 in the quickest match of the day.

Number 2 doubles of Nick Finn and Brenden Popson also made their first start as a team this season and had a perfect match winning 6-0, 6-0 they quickly followed the number 1 doubles team off the court.

Our doubles teams played really well and brought many of the aspects of recent practice onto the courts.

In the only reserve match of the day Joe Solis lost 4-0, 4-5 (6-8), 0-1 (12-12). His match was the last to finish and was nearly stopped due to wet courts.

Next up for the Pioneers will be New Albany on Friday.

Travis wins 2nd Singles at New Albany Invitational

Travis Cunningham was the winner of the number 2 singles position for the Providence Tennis Team in the New Albany invitational. Travis won his first two matches very easily losing just four games. In his first match he defeated a player from Pekin Eastern 6-1, 6-0 and his second match was against a player from Scottsburg he won 6-0, 6-3. In the finals of 2^nd singles he played a very good player from New Albany winning in three set, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. In the final match he got up early, lost the lead before winning the finally winning the last three games to close out the match. Providence will face New Albany on Friday.

Pete Andres at number 1 singles won his opening match against Lanesville, 6-1, 6-0 on Friday night. He lost a three set match to Austin, he defaulted his final match due to illness.

Jacob Kraft lost a close three set match to a player from Scottsburg on Friday night. On Saturday he won both of his matches defeating players from Charlestown and Austin.

Number 1 doubles of Nick Primavera and Brenden Popson lost their first match to New Albany on Friday night, who won that spot in the tournament. They won both matches on Saturday against teams from Pekin Eastern and Clarksville; Providence will face Clarksville this week also.

Number 2 doubles lost their first two matches against Austin and Scottsburg, both of these matches went three sets for Nick Finn and Drew Thomas. In the final match for number 2 doubles, a lineup change was made with Daniel Becht playing with Nick Finn, they won their match against Charlestown.

Providence JV loses to Corydon Varsity

The junior varsity team dropped a close match to Corydon varsity at Corydon. The match score is not indicative of the closeness of the match losing 4-1. With Ryan Juodikis winning in a reserve match 8-4. Andrew Jerdonek won at 3^rd singles in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 jumping out to early leads in each set. Daniel Becht lost a three set match 6-0, 3-6, 3-6 against a solid number 1 player. Joe Solis lost 5-7, 5-7 at second singles. First double of Steven Cabezas and Jacob Samples lost 0-6, 4-6, they staged a strong rally in the second set but fell short. Second doubles of Derek Benebig and Weston Spalding played a strong match losing 5-7, 5-7. The junior varsity played well in general but had critical points which they did not win, which could have turned several of the matches around.

The JV boys will have one day of practice prior to facing another varsity team on Monday.

Providence JV defeats South Central JV 4 - 1

The Providence Junior Varsity team defeated the South Central Junior Varsity at Community Park. This was a JV only match. All winners won their second set at a 4-0 score. Joe Solis played number 1 singles and was a 4-0, 4-0 winner, he was the first player to complete his match. Andrew Jerdonek won 4-2, 4-0 at second singles and Ryan Juodikis provided a sweep of the singles position winning third singles at 5-3, 4-0. The number two doubles combo of Derek Benebig and Weston Spalding won 4-2, 4-0. The only loser on the day was the first doubles team which lost in three set (third set super tie breaker); the team of Steven Cabezas and Jacob Samples won the first set and then dropped the second before losing in the tie breaker for the third set.

This was the first match in which the players had extensive coaching, since during the first two matches they played at the same time as the varsity. Most of the players responded very well to the coaching and were able to accomplish on the court what the coaches were requesting of them.

Providence Drops a Close Match

Providence lost a close match to Seymour 3-2. The end of the match was highlighted by third singles and first doubles going three sets, the teams each won one of the final matches thus the final score of 3-2 in favor of the Owls. Senior Travis Cunningham had an impressive win at number 2 singles winning the match 6-0, 6-0 and was the first match off the courts. The other victory for the Pioneers came at third singles with Senior Jacob Kraft winning in three set, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Jacob came from behind in the third set for the victory. Number one doubles of Senior Nick Primavera and Sophomore Brenden Popson lost a three set match 4-6, 6-3, 2-6.

The junior varsity also won two matches, but lost 3-2 as a team. Daniel Becht won 4-1, 4-0 at 1^st singles and Andrew Jerdonek won 4-1, 4-1 at third singles. This was the first win for both of these competitors. Each of the other three matches were lost in a third set super tie breaker. The JV team plays sets to 4 games and must win by two games and the third set is a super tie breaker to 10 by 2.

Providence loses to Jeff

In the first match of the season the Pioneers lost to the Red Devils on Jeffersonville's home courts. Jeff has one of the better number one singles players in the state and he won over Pete Andres.

Providence has had to replace four of the top eight players from last year's squad and three players playing in their first varsity match against the always strong Jeff team.

Travis Cunningham was the lone winner for the Pioneers at Number 2 singles, winning a match that went three sets and more than three and one-half hours. Two of the sets went to a tie break. Travis dropped the first set in a tie breaker and proceeded to win the second set at 6-2, he won the third set also in a tie breaker.

Senior Jacob Kraft lost in straight sets, with a close second set. The number 1 doubles team of Nick Primavrera and Brenden Popson lost in straight sets as did the number 2 doubles team of Nick Finn and Drew Thomas. Both doubles matches were close.

Number two singles in JV was won by Joe Solis in straight sets and number one doubles of Steven Cabezas and Jacob Samples won in three sets.

The next match will be on Thursday at Providence home courts of Community Park in New Albany at 5 PM.

Girls Tennis Awards Night

The Providence Girls Tennis Team held their annual awards banquet on July 13^th at the home of Hanna Gish. Most of the players and parents were able to attend the evening which included dinner and an outdoor awards program. The parents were thanked for all the efforts they gave to the team this year to help and make the season a success.

The successful season included winning the New Albany Invitational (winning two championships), Austin Invitational (winning four of five championships)as well as the Jeffersonville Sectional. The sectional championship is the 5^th in a row for the team which included losing only one match in route to the title. The team will be shooting to hang a new sectional banner next year (the sectional win completed the current banner).The team fell in the regional to New Albany in a very close loss. Individual Doubles team of Courtney Murphy and Emily DiNoto won the sectional and loss a tough match at the regional level in Carmel to Booneville. This was the first time in at least five years that an individual team advanced to regional level for Providence.

Providence Number 1 Doubles Win Sectional Double Championship

The Providence Number 1 doubles team of Courtney Murphy and Emily DiNoto, won the Individual Doubles Championship at Floyd Central on Thursday afternoon. Providence defeated the Salem Tandem in two sets. Providence won the first set 6-1 and was leading 3-0 before Salem stormed back to take a 5-4 lead. Providence won two of the next three games to force a tiebreaker. Salem jumped up 4-0 in the tiebreaker, but again the Providence team was not to be denied and won 7 of the next 8 points to close out the tiebreaker at 7-5. Coach DiNoto noted that Providence really played the first 10 games very effectively. But over the next six games Salem played some very strong tennis in non-traditional ways. Gradually Providence got their second wind to force the tiebreaker. It appears that the girls will play their next match on June 6^th in the regional.

Providence win Jeffersonville Sectional over Clarksville

Providence defeated Clarksville 4 – 1 to win their fifth consecutive sectional title. Behind the strong play of both of their doubles teams which finished nearly at the same time, the Lady Pioneers had an outstanding day of tennis, with Freshman Megan Jakoby providing the deciding point at third singles and Kady Bandy winning a three set match that lasted three and one-half hours for the final margin of victory.

At first singles Deahna Welcher defeated Stephanie Smith for the lone win by the Lady Generals. The score is not indicative of the closeness of the match and how well Stephanie Smith played losing 6-1, 6-0.

At second singles Kady Bandy won a hard fought match over Tiffany Fitzpatrick in three sets. In the second set Kady lost a long tie breaker after rallying from 3-4 and 4-5. She came out after the break to dominate in the third set. Her scores were 6-2, 6-7 (10-12), 6-1.

At third singles Megan Jakoby won over Jamie Wilkerson 6-2, 6-2. Megan played an excellent match and sealed the victory for the Lady Pioneers. Coach DiNoto said he was really proud of the way his freshman stepped up her play in the sectional.

At number one doubles the tandem of Emily DiNoto and Courtney Murphy won 6-2, 6-0 over Ashley Lind and Jazzmine Rolon. Both girls were able to dominate at the net in the victory.

At number two doubles Hanna Gish and Hillary Ernstberger won 6-0, 6-1. Their coach stated he was really proud of how well his second duo was playing at the end of the season.

With the win the team will move on to the regional on Tuesday afternoon against New Albany at Floyd Central High School.

Providence won all five matches in straight sets, having only one set in which they lost more than one game. Stephanie Smith won 6-2, 6-1 at first singles. The second singles, Kady Bandy and third single Megan Jakoby both blanked their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Number 1 doubles of Emily DiNoto and Courtney Murphy won 6-1, 6-1 and the second doubles team of Hanna Gish and Hillary Ernstberger won 6-1, 6-0 to complete the sweep.

I was really pleased at our match play today stated Coach Vince DiNoto. I was unsure how we would come out today after such a big win yesterday over Jeff. I thought the girls responded very well. Our senior captains of Emily DiNoto and Kady Bandy provided great leadership today.

Providence beats Jeffersonville 5 – 0 in the opening round of the Jeffersonville Sectional

Providence Girls Tennis Team who had just last week defeated Jeffersonville 3 – 2, won the opening round of the Jeffersonville sectional 5 – 0 over the Red Devils.

Providence Junior Stephanie Smith defeated Katherine Clark 0-6, 6-0, 6-0. Stephanie dropped the first set quickly at 0 – 6, but stormed back to win the second set just as quickly 6-0 and after the break for splitting sets continued with her effort to win the final set 6-0.

Providence Senior Kady Bandy defeated Michelle Roberts in straight sets in the longest match of the day. Bandy had lost a three set match to Roberts the previous week but won in the sectional 6-3, 7-5.

Providence Freshman Megan Jakoby was pushed to three sets, after dropping the first set 3-6, she won a tough second set 6-3 before a dominating performance in the third set at 6-1.

Providence doubles team continued to have outstanding seasons. The number one doubles team of Emily DiNoto and Courtney Murphy, played another solid match winning 6-2, 6-1. The number two doubles team of Hanna Gish and Hillary Ernstberger won 6-0, 6-4.

Coach DiNoto commented that he was very pleased with the efforts put out by all his players. Our double teams continue to play very well and our singles player played very tough hard matches and won points in games that were needed to secure the victory for us. Stephanie just had an outstanding second and third set at number one singles. Next up for the Lady Pioneer will be New Washington at 4:30 PM at Jeffersonville High School.

Charlestown and Clarksville will play their first match at 4:30 at Jeffersonville.

Providence won a close match with Jeffersonville 3 – 2 at the Red Devils home courts.

At first singles Stephanie Smith lost a tough match 1 – 6, 5 – 7. Stephanie began the second set playing very competitive tennis leading most of the set. After the second rain delay of the day Steph dropped the set to her opponent.

At second singles in the longest match of the day Kady Bandy lost in three sets with the final set being lost in a tiebreaker. Kady lost the first set 4-6, but won the second 6-2; in the final set she lost 6-7 with a tiebreaker loss of 5 – 7. Kady played a good match against a strong opponent.

At third singles Megan Jakoby won 6-0, 6-2. Megan went out and played another strong match dominating most of the play the entire match. Megan was the first player to finish.

At first doubles Emily DiNoto and Courtney Murphy played some of their best doubles of the season and won 6-1, 6-2, in the second set the tandem lost two games to make the score 3-2 before closing the match strongly.

At second doubles Hanna Gish and Hillary Ernstberger started slow falling behind 5-2 before taking the set to a tiebreaker which they lost. In the second set they again fell behind 5-2 and rallied to lead 6-5 before losing the next game to play a second tiebreaker in the match, they won this tiebreaker 7-2. Riding a second set victory the team dominated to close out the match 6-2.

Seymour Falls 5-0

On Thursday the Lady Pioneers defeated Hoosier Hills Conference foe Seymour 5 – 0. The match began after 5 PM on a very pleasant afternoon one of the better days for playing tennis that team has experienced this year, which was a big contrast to the match the previous year at Seymour. The ladies took advantage of the weather recording a sweep over a very good Seymour Owls tennis team.

Freshman Megan Jakoby, 3^rd singles, had one of her best matches of the season winning 6-1, 6-1.

Senior Kady Bandy, 2^nd singles, played an outstanding match with many very long points and won 6-1, 6-2 over a very solid player.

Junior Stephanie Smith, 1^st singles, played an outstanding first set winning 6-0, but a very determined opponent pushed the second set, with Stephanie winning 7-5.

The number 1 doubles team of Emily DiNoto and Courtney Murphy continued to improved and beat a strong doubles team 6-4, 6-3. The team had an outstanding service day losing only one service game and breaking their opponents on the next game after the lost game. While the score was close they played with confidence.

The number 2 doubles team of Hanna Gish and Hillary Ernstberger had to rally in the first set coming back from 4 – 5 to win 7 – 5. They won the second set 6-4 with a very good effort. Hanna continues to have strong service games which create winners for the team.

Overall the team played one of their best matches of the season at every position. This is the 5^th win in a row for the Lady Pioneers.

Providence Sweeps Corydon

Providence varsity and JV sweep Corydon 5-0 and 4-0 respectively.

The victory was lead by number 1 singles player junior Stephanie Smith and the number 1 doubles team of senior Emily DiNoto and junior Courtney Smith.

Number 1 doubles won 6-0, 6-1; dropping only the 12^th game of the match and then winning the next game to close out the match. The team played really very well together and had many winners. They were the first off the courts.

Stephanie played a strong very positive match. She did a good job placing the ball on the court keeping her opponent constantly on the defensive. She had really strong service games in the first set. She won 6-0, 6-2.

Number 2 doubles won 6-2, 6-1 and played a good match using many of the items in which had been worked on in practice over the past week. Hanna had outstanding service games recording 11 aces.

Junior Sammie Riggs played at the number 3 singles spot and recorded a 6-4, 6-4 victory, her first as a varsity player. She was playing in a replacement role in this match. She played a very good match and covered the court very effectively, with solid ground strokes.

Senior Kady Bandy won the final point at second singles. Kady had many long rallies with a girl who could effectively cover the court. She won 6-2, 6-4.

JV players Kristin Simms and Maggie Bremmer normally a doubles team played singles today due to injury of players. Kristin won a close match at 8-6 and Maggie won an even closer match at 9-7. Number 1 doubles players of Kara Garcia and Jessica Stenger won 8-6. The final point was won by Rebecca Garner and Sara Federspiel at 8-4.

Providence Defeated Cross Town Rival Clarksville

Providence defeated Clarksville 3 – 2 in a very close match on Monday. Providence wins came at 3^rd singles and both doubles.

Number 1 and 2 singles players of Stephanie Smith and Kady Bandy played good close matches in losing efforts. Stephanie lost to a very strong opponent 2-6, 2-6. Kady lost in the longest match of the 4-6, 2-6.

Freshman Megan Jaoby won 6-3, 6-4, she played a very strong second set, playing very good tennis.

Senior Emily DiNoto and junior Courtney Murphy won 6-1, 6-2. This was quickest match of the day after having the longest match in their previous outing.

Junior Hanna Gish and sophomore Hillary Ernstberger won 7-5, 6-4 in a somewhat off day for this duo.

Reserve player Natalie Sisson won 8-1.

This was a good win over a strong sectional opponent.

Providence defeats Manual 5 - 0

The Pioneer's defeated Manual High School of Louisville, KY 5 – 0. The team was lead by number 1 singles player junior Stephanie Smith. She won 6-3, 7-5 over Sophia Brown. Stephanie played a very good match and was very focused, in the second set she fell behind 5 – 4 and rallied to win the last three games.

Senior Kady Bandy won 6-3, 6-1 over Ali Wright. Kady played an outstanding match in very windy conditions that really affected her game.

Freshman Megan Jakoby rallied in the first set to win 6-4 and an outstanding second set to win 6-1. Megan played one of her better matches of the season in defeating Casey Blair.

The number one doubles team of Emily DiNoto and Courtney Murphy had the longest match of the day lasting near three hours. They lost the first set 4-6 and rallied to win the second set in a tie breaker (7-5), they came out and played an outstanding third set with extremely aggressive play and good serving to win 6-2.

Number two doubles team of Hanna Gish and Hillary Ernstberger, rallied to win the first set and had strong performance in the second set to win 6-4, 6-4 over Molly Makela and Madison Fante. They played very strongly and were able to accomplish what assistant Scoot Gurgol suggested during side switches.

It was most like the best five matches as a team, everyone played outstanding tennis on a very hot and windy day. I was pleased to see how the players were able to rally after falling behind.

The girls also were able to have some fun during the day.

Pioneers win Austin Invitational

Providence won the Austin Invitational Girls Tennis Tournament on Saturday, winning four of the five championships losing only at the third singles position.

Junior Stephanie Smith led the team winning 6-1, 6-0 against Sara Hutton of Scottsburg and 6-3, 6-4 against Hannah Wahmer of Austin. Smith had excellent matches against strong first singles players. Stephanie had a great day and played solid tennis for the team. She is 2 and 1 on the season.

At second singles senior co-captain Kady Bandy won 6-0, 6-0 against Megan Edwards of Austin and 6-2, 6-1 against Holly Stewart of Scottsburg. In the four years that Kady has played for Providence this was the best two matches she has played in a tournament. She went out on the court first (in her first match) and was off the courts very quickly with a strong performance. She is 5 and 1 on the season.

Junior Sammie Riggs was the only loser for Providence dropping her first match 3-6, 0-6 to Katie Birch of Scottsburg and 0-6, 1-6 against Shawnee Bayes of Austin. Sammie had many good points and the scores don't indicate how well she played during the tournament.

The first doubles tandem of senior co-captain Emily DiNoto and junior Courtney Murphy easily won their first match 6-2, 6-2 over the senior doubles team of Katie Trueblood and Amanda Mundan of Scottsburg. In the final match of the tournament they out distanced the Austin team of Lisann Goodin and Shantel Gray 6-4, 6-4. They played solid tennis and had some very good games. They are 5 and 1 on the season.

The second doubles team of junior Hanna Gish and sophomore Hillary Ernstbeger won 6-3, 6-1 against Brittany Neace and Sidney Neace of Austin and won a long match against Bonsett and Donovan of Scottsburg 6-4, 6-4 in their final match. This team continues to improve as a doubles team and their individual skills are also improving. They are 5 and 1 as a team.

Overall it was a very good day. Anytime you can go into a tournament and win 4 of the 5 first places you have done very well. It is very easy to just have a bad match along the way and the girls just did not let this happen. It was very rewarding to see that none of the winners had a three set match.

Providence Ties for New Albany Invitational Title

On Saturday, April 11^th the Providence Girls Tennis Team Tied Christian Academy of Indiana for the New Albany Invitational title. Providence was the only school in the tournament with two first place winners.

Left to Right; Freshman Megan Jackoby (1st place 3 singles), Senior Captain Kady Bandy (1st place 2 singles), Junior Stephanie Smith, Junior Hanna Gish, Junior Courtney Murphy (2nd place 1 doubles), Senior Captain Emily DiNoto (2nd place 1 doubles) and Coach Vince DiNoto, not pictured Sammie Riggs and Hillary Ernstberger.

Junior Sammie Riggs played first singles due to the injury to Junior Stephanie Smith. This was Sammie's first varsity competition and she gave a valiant effort in her three matches, though she did not win any of the her matches her TEAM effort was extremely important to the success the team in the tournament.

Senior Kady Bandy avenged a loss at two singles in the finals against Christian Academy (she had lost in a dual match earlier in the week). In the finals she split sets and won the super tie breaker which counted as the third set. Kady had two very good matches earlier in the tournament winning each of them with the first one won at 6-0, 6-0. Kady's record stands at 3 and 1. Kady received the 1^st Place Trophy for 2^nd singles.

Freshman Megan Jakoby, playing third singles, also avenged her only loss of the young season in the finals against another Christian Academy competitor. Megan dominated the match from the beginning and played her best match of the season. In the semi-finals she was pushed to a three set match (super tie break for the third set), she lost the first set and was down in the second before a super come back and a domination in the tie breaker. Megan's record stands at 3 and 1. Megan received the 1^st Place Trophy for 3^rd singles.

The number one doubles team of Junior Courtney Murphy and Senior Emily DiNoto, also reached the final and played Christian Academy number one doubles team. The team lost a tough straight set match to a team they had defeated in a close match earlier in the week. Their record is 3 and 1. They received the 2^nd Place Trophy for 1^st doubles.

The number two doubles team of Hanna Gish and Hillary Ernstberger lost their opening match to New Albany in three set (losing the super tie breaker). They played a very good first set, but the New Albany tandem won the second and the tie breaker for the third set. Their next opponents defaulted in the next match. Thus placing them in a match against Clarksville High School, Hanna and Hillary dominated the match scoring very important points for the team. Their record is 3 and 1.

Providence falls to Christian Academy of Indiana

On Thursday April 9, 2009, the Providence Girls Tennis Team lost their first match of the season to Christian Academy on their home courts at Community Park. The score was 3 – 2 in favor of the visitors with three of the five varsity matches going three sets. Three reserve matches were played with Providence winning all of them.

Junior Stephanie Smith lost in three sets, she started the match with a heavily taped leg and as the match continued her leg gave her sustained pain. In the third she made a gallant effort to come back but fell short 6-3, 5-7, 4-6.

Senior Co-Captain Kady Bandy lost in three sets in a match that lasted nearly three and one-half hours, with both a light rain and darkness setting in. The match had numerous games that lasted more than 10 minutes. 3-6, 6-3, 0-6

Freshman Megan Jakoby playing in her first varsity match lost in straight sets. 2-6, 0-6

Senior Co-Captain Emily DiNoto and Junior Courtney Murphy returned as a doubles team playing in the 1 doubles spot for the first time. They split sets and fell behind in the third 3-0 and 4-1 before winning five games in a row to close out the match. The final five games were highlighted by excellent winners by both Courtney and Emily. 6-3, 5-7, 6-4

Junior Hanna Gish and Sophomore Hillary Ernstberger (playing her first varsity match) won in straight sets. Hanna had several excellent winners at net and Hillary played the very difficult add court. Both ladies played very good aggressive tennis. This was a great beginning for this new doubles team. 6-3, 6-4

In the reserved matches Junior Sammy Riggs won 8-1, Freshman Kara Garcia won 8-4 and the doubles team of Freshmen Maggie Bremmer and Kristin Simms won 8-5.

I really like this video, on how to hit winning points, using a lob as an offensive weapon. The author discusses how this gives you the ability to hit a winner by moving in for the next shot, but for many of your opponents they are going to completely miss hit a deep backhand lob and you win they point on that shot. Therefore, we need to make sure we can hit this type of shot and also return this type of shot if someone hits it to us.

Schedule Finalized

The schedule now posted on the web page has been finalized for the spring of 2009. The only changes that will occur will be in the case of weather or changes requested by other schools. Note the schedule has two tournaments on Saturdays that are varsity only (7 players and alternates). There is also a Saturday three way match at our home courts. There are two JV only matches (most dual matches will include JV matches) and the first match has been pushed back because of spring break and practice rules.

Physicals

All girls playing tennis are required to have a physical on the approved IHSAA form. If you had a physical for another sport during the current school year you will not need to get another physical. You may not start practicing with the team (first day March 16) until the physical is in the athletic director's office.

Parent Meeting

A meeting of all Providence Girl Tennis parents will occur on Sunday, March 1^st at 3 PM. At least one parent and the student athlete should attend the meeting. The meeting will occur at the home of Coach Vince at 2910 Slone Dr. in Jeffersonville.

At the meeting we will discuss team rules, physicals, uniform and Goals for the team. The meeting will be about 1 hr to 1 hr and 30 minutes.

First Official Day of Practice March 16th

March 16th will be the first day of practice for the 2009 season for the Girls Tennis Team. Practices will take place at Community Park in New Albany. Girls must have a physical into the AD office prior to the first practice, conditioning practices will begin in mid Feb. at the school.

All girls must have 10 practices (not including conditioning) to compete in a match. Currently the first match is scheduled for March 31st (only 13 practice days, including Saturdays), but maybe moved. A complete schedule will be posted shortly. The schedule includes two tournaments and 14 matches (including a 3 way at Community Park). Make sure to make arrangements for the younger girls who do not drive to get to the courts. Plan on Saturday practice unless announced other wise.

Practices will start at 3:30PM and end at 5:45 PM. Hitting will begin at 3:45 PM. All equipment will be the responsibility of the ladies and the managers to bring to the court from the shed, including balls and ball machines. We will have two ball machines to use this year.

There will be an organizational meeting of the return letter winners at Coach Vince's home on Sunday, Feb. 15th to discuss uniforms and goals for the team. There will be a general meeting the following week right after school.

The purpose of this blog will be to provide information about the boys and girls tennis teams at Our Lady of Providence High School in Clarksville, IN. The head coach of the boys team is Scott Gurgol and the head coach of the girls team is Vince DiNoto. They each serve as the assistant coach for the other team.

Providence girls season will begin in late March of 2009 and the boys in August of 2009.

Results of matches and highlights of different players will be posted on this site.
